Keeping Cats Indoors vs. Letting them Out?

Cats love to explore the great outdoors, and allowing them outdoor access has many benefits (like fresh air and exercise). However, outside is also a dangerous place for domestic felines. Getting lost or stolen are the obvious risks, but there are many, many more including getting hit by a car, fighting with other animals, or being attacked by a predator.

Though cats can live a very happy life without outdoor playtime, those who do elect to allow their cats outside should keep them confined to a specific area of the yard, preferably with a fence designed especially for cats (easy-to-assemble kits are sold on-line). Even with a fence, however, supervise the cat at all times, never letting it out of your site (cats are adept at getting themselves out of complex situations, and they could outsmart the fence).

Also, keep in mind that animal welfare organizations like the Humane Society strongly urge cat owners to keep theirs inside. Instead, offer plenty of indoor recreation, cats may try to put on a sophisticated front, but behind the mask, every cat is just a kitten at heart. And make sure your cat has access to a sun porch, aka windowsill - just looking outside at birds and trees will keep it entertained.
