Pay Attention to your Cat's Actions and Habbits
by Dr. Jeff Werber, DVM
In addition to good kitten care in its early days, keeping your adult cat as healthy as possible is mainly a matter of paying close attention to its actions and habits. If something seems off - it may very well be. A few signs to watch for: poor posture, sluggishness, a crusty nose, ear discharge, inflamed eyes or eye discharge, inflamed gums, a dull or dry coat, or labored breathing.
Cats can also express their need for medical attention in other ways, so take note if your cat stops eating or drinking, experiences vomiting or diarrhea, stops using the litter box or exhibits a change in grooming habits. Even a change in the sound of your cat's meow could mean something is wrong. If you have noticed any of these symptoms, see your veterinarian as soon as possible (and while you're at it, ask him or her for a list of other signs to watch for - these are just a sampling).
Optimistically, however, your cat won't experience any of these symptoms as long as it receives good preventive care, such as annual check-ups and twice-a-week dental cleanings (you can brush your cat's teeth with a child's toothbrush and special feline toothpaste).
A healthy diet is also essential (see our nutrition section) as is a healthy weight - most cats should weigh between 8 and 10 pounds. If your cat weighs too much or too little, or you notice sudden, significant change (significant to a cat is about 1 pound), talk to your veterinarian - your cat may be ill or need a special diet (overweight cats are at risk for obesity, which can lead to other serious health problems).
Still, even a cat that lives with the most diligent owner can fall victim to heart disease, kidney problems, asthma or a virus. Veterinarians can diagnose your cat, and refer you to a specialist if needed. If this occurs, follow the veterinarian's instructions carefully, especially when it comes to administering medication. No cat enjoys taking meds, but there are ways to make the process less stressful.
